What to Do When a Death Occurs at Home
September 15, 2025
“It’s one of life’s hardest moments. Here’s a simple, clear guide on what to do first when a loved one passes at home.”
Few moments are more overwhelming than when a loved one passes away at home. It can feel sudden, confusing, and emotional. Knowing what to do can bring a small sense of calm in those first hours.
- If hospice is involved: Call your hospice nurse first. They’ll confirm the passing and help guide you.
- If hospice is not involved: Call 911. Emergency responders will come, and often a coroner or medical examiner may need to be notified.
- Once official steps are complete: Call your funeral home. Our team will take care of transportation, and we’ll walk you through what comes next.
You don’t need to have all the answers in that moment. You only need to know the first call — and that’s where we step in with care and guidance.

Families often ask this in a whisper: “Do we need to call right now?” It’s a completely normal question. In many situations—especially when hospice is involved—you have more time than you think. You are allowed to breathe, gather close family, and take a short moment to process what has happened. That said, timing can depend on the circumstances. Unexpected deaths may involve authorities, and hospital or facility policies may affect when transfer occurs. The safest approach is simply to ask: hospice or staff will tell you what’s appropriate for your situation.
