What to Expect at a Graveside Service in Middle Tennessee

May 5, 2026

Not every farewell needs to happen inside a chapel. For many families across Dickson and surrounding counties, a graveside service is exactly the right choice.

This is still a way to be intimate, personal, and deeply meaningful. If you've never attended one or are considering it for a loved one, here's what to expect.

What Is a Graveside Service?

A graveside service is a funeral or memorial gathering held directly at the burial site rather than — or sometimes in addition to — a service at a funeral home or church. It can be the only service held, or it can follow a chapel service as the final farewell before burial. They tend to be shorter than full funeral services, typically lasting between 20 and 45 minutes, but that doesn't make them any less meaningful.

What Typically Happens

Every graveside service is unique, but most follow a similar flow. Guests gather at the graveside, often seated in chairs provided by the funeral home — Spann provides a tent and chairs as part of our graveside service. An officiant, pastor, or family member leads the service with words of remembrance, scripture, or prayer. Music may be played live or through a speaker. Family members may share memories or read something meaningful. The committal takes place, often with final words and sometimes a symbolic gesture like placing flowers on the casket.

What to Wear and How to Prepare

Middle Tennessee weather is unpredictable, so it's always wise to check the forecast and dress in layers if needed. Comfortable shoes are a good idea, especially in spring or fall when the ground may be soft. Dark or muted colors are traditional, but many families today simply ask guests to wear what feels respectful — sometimes even requesting a favorite color of the deceased.

A Word About Emotion

Graveside services can feel more emotionally immediate than chapel services, simply because of the physical reality of the setting. That's not a reason to avoid them — for many families it brings a sense of closure that nothing else quite provides. There is no right or wrong way to feel. Grief is welcome here.

Families often ask this in a whisper: “Do we need to call right now?” It’s a completely normal question. In many situations—especially when hospice is involved—you have more time than you think. You are allowed to breathe, gather close family, and take a short moment to process what has happened. That said, timing can depend on the circumstances. Unexpected deaths may involve authorities, and hospital or facility policies may affect when transfer occurs. The safest approach is simply to ask: hospice or staff will tell you what’s appropriate for your situation.
