Left to be with our Lord on May 21, 2026.

Wayne joined the Army in 1952 where he served in the 82nd Airborne in Ft. Bragg and in Germany. He later transferred to Ft. Campbell 101st Airborne and in Ft. Benning both as a paratrooper. In 1965 he was deployed to Vietnam where he served for two tours of duty, and also served as a Special Intelligence Analyst. He was awarded an Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal and the Bronze Star Medal.

Wayne has been a public servant in his town of Burns, and the greater Dickson County area in several capacities.

A pillar of the community, he has served as a police officer, city commissioner for Burns, General Sessions Judge, Juvenile Detention Officer and Juvenile Judge in Dickson County, TN.

He was also involved in community charitable organizations with the Kiwanis Club. He was a Master Mason and active with the Shriners for many years. He performed with the “Keystone Cops” within the Shriners organization with the nickname “Sandy.” Wayne was also a member of the VFW.

He had a servant’s heart which was evident in his legacy of service to his country, his community, and to his family and friends.


Visitation: will begin on Tuesday, May 26, 2026 from 4 – 8 PM, and will continue on Wednesday, May 27, 2026 from 11:00 AM – until time of service at Spann Funeral Home.

Funeral Service: will begin at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, May 27, 2026 from the Chapel of Spann Funeral Home with Steve Williams officiating.

Interment: will follow at Dickson County Memorial Gardens

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Shriner's Children Hospital.

Children: Randy Sanders (Phyllis) of London, KY Kathy Deaver of Dickson, TN Dana Sanders of London, KY Robin Carey of Dickson, TN Killie Shearon (Frankie) of Chapmansboro, TN

Bonus Children: Ricky Wallace of Fairview, TN Robin Harrison (Bobby) of Fairview, TN Michelle Murakami (Kevin) of Fairview, TN

Grandchildren: Twenty-two grandchildren

Great Grandchildren: Thirty-five great-grandchildren


Preceded in death by:

Parents: Laura and James Luther Sanders

Brothers: Robert Sanders, Paul Sanders, David Sanders, and Ray Sanders

Sisters: Joy McCormick, and Fay Oliver


Arrangements entrusted to Spann Funeral Home & Cremation Services, located in Dickson, Tennessee.
