Born in 1936 and raised in Bellsburg, TN, Hal was a kind man, a gentle man, and a true southern gentleman. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters and by his wife Sue whom he loved so dearly. He leaves behind his children Lisa (Steve), Leslie (Gary) and Lee, his grandchildren Kody (Cynthia), Kourtney, Konor, and his great-grandson Keith. He was called “Buddy” by his grandkids and great-grandson, which is fitting because Hal truly was EVERYONE’S buddy.
He had a long and storied career in radio; first as on-air talent and later as a program director and station manager for some of the most significant, major-market radio stations in the country. He mentored numerous radio professionals and, in fact, gave many of them their first big break in the business.
A person of faith, Hal was active in his home church in Lincoln CA where he resided. He loved golf and remained an avid golfer with his band of "Renegades" until the end of his life. But most of all he was “Buddy” -- that kind, gentle guy that always had a handshake, a story, and a smile for everyone he met. The world lost one of the last of the good guys on February 19 and he will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Graveside Service for Mr. Howell Lee "Hal" Smith will be conducted at 11:00 am Monday, June 16 2025 at Union Cemetery in Dickson, Tennessee.
