He worked as a machinist for a brief stint until his heart drew him to farming full time. David would go onto running one of the most successful and respected farming operations in the State of Tennessee. He primarily grew tobacco and raised cattle, but also grew hay and raised hogs. His farming spanned over four decades and continued a tradition at Matlock Valley Farms that earned a Century Farm designation by the State of Tennessee. His work earned many accolades to include Young Farmer of the Year and Soil Conservationist of the Year. He was acknowledged for being the first person in Tennessee to utilize the “No-Till” method in tobacco. David was a leader in his field serving on many Boards of Directors including Farm Bureau, Farm Service Agency, Soil Conservation Office, Dickson County Extension Office, Dickson County CO-OP, and the Dickson County Livestock Association.
David was an avid Alabama fan and enjoyed watching them win twelve of sixteen national championships throughout his lifetime. He shared his love of football with his family, and his family carries that same passion today. Roll Tide.
David was a member of First Baptist Church of Dickson where he was an ordained deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years. Numerous youths have come through David and his wife Annette’s Sunday School class. They are all considered close family still to this day. David accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age and has never been afraid to share the gospel. His life reflected a steadfast faith that was an inspiration to many.
David was married to his high school sweetheart and love of his life Annette for nearly 45 years. He was deeply devoted to his wife and family. He meant a lot to this community, but meant even more to them.
David is survived by his wife, Annette Clifton Matlock; his children, Alan David Matlock (Emily) of Dickson, TN, Jessica Lynn Brooks (Stanley) of Dickson, TN, his sister, Donna Sowell (Jim); his three grandchildren, Brianna Joy Matlock, James Alan Matlock, and Camryn Ella Brooks; his nieces and nephews, Stephanie Sparks (Frankie), Belinda Cummings (Paul), Rebecca Hagewood, Derrick Cathey (Leah), Michelle Shadowens (Jack), James Lampley (Melissa), JoDale Hafner (Andrea), and Justin Hafner (Krystal).
