Mr. Allen Odell Nichols, Sr., age 84
Of Waverly, TN passed away Monday, April 14, 2025, at his home. He was born March 24, 1941, in Old Johnsonville, TN to Boots and Otellia Nichols.
In his professional life, Odell was deeply involved with the Chamber of Commerce, where he left an indelible mark as a member and former President. His leadership and commitment to the community were evident during his tenure, particularly as a contributing member of Leadership Humphreys County and the Humphreys County Economic Board. Through these roles, he worked tirelessly to foster economic growth and development, always striving for the betterment of his community.
Odell distinguished himself as a member and former President of the Humphreys County Economic Development Corporation (HCEDC), where his leadership and vision contributed significantly to local development initiatives. His influence extended further as he served two terms as the Humphreys County Commissioner for the 5th District, diligently advocating for the needs and concerns of his constituents. In addition, Odell fulfilled the role of Humphreys County Judicial Commissioner, where he was known for his fairness and integrity. His contributions to local governance and community leadership have left an indelible mark on the lives of many.
Odell was a valued member of the Humphreys County Fair Board, an organization that fosters community spirit and brings people together through celebration and agriculture. His commitment and hard work were instrumental in ensuring that the fair continued to thrive year after year, providing joy and entertainment for families and friends alike. In addition to his role with the fair board, Odell was also an active participant in the Humphreys County Higher Education site solution committee for the college. His passion for education and the importance of learning was evident in his tireless advocacy for accessible educational opportunities within the community.
A long-time resident of Waverly, Odell was not only deeply connected to his local community but also actively involved in his faith. He was a cherished member of the Waverly United Methodist Church, where he served as the Sunday School Superintendent. His commitment to fostering a nurturing and inclusive environment for both children and adults alike was evident throughout his many years of service.
Odell will be fondly remembered for his selfless contributions as he took great pride in embodying the spirit of Santa Claus. His warm heart and generous nature shone brightly during the holiday season, as he brought joy and laughter to countless children and families through his involvement with various churches and civic organizations. Noteworthy among these were his unforgettable appearances at the Waverly Healthcare Christmas Party, the Toys for Tots initiative, the WCHS Special Needs Christmas Party, and his joyful interactions with students at WES and Pre-K. Odell's commitment to community service enriched the lives of many and created lasting memories that will be cherished for years to come.
Odell devoted over 15 years to coaching Dixie League Baseball, where he inspired countless young athletes through his knowledge of the game and his profound sense of integrity. His enthusiasm for baseball extended beyond coaching; he also served as a volunteer umpire for both Dixie Boys Baseball and Girls Softball, where he was respected for his fairness and professionalism on the field. His expertise and leadership were further recognized when he took on the role of District Director for Dixie Girls Softball, helping to shape the future of the sport for many aspiring players.
As a TSSAA Baseball & Softball umpire, Odell became widely recognized for his contributions, culminating in his historic appointment as the first Tennessee Umpire-in-Chief for the Dixie Boys Baseball. His impact on the sporting community was deeply felt, and his commitment to fostering athleticism, teamwork, and sportsmanship will be remembered fondly by all those who had the privilege of working alongside him.
Odell will be remembered as a kind and generous individual who made a lasting impression on everyone he encountered. His unwavering dedication to his community and his compassionate nature have left an indelible mark.
Visitation will be held from 3:00pm until service time Thursday, April 17th at Humphreys County Funeral Home.
A Celebration of Life Service for Mr. Nichols will be conducted at 6:00pm Thursday, April 17, 2025, in the Humphreys County Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Keith Willhite officiating.
